Long-term adaptation to noise-vocoded speech ...
Peelle, Jonathan. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: Noise-vocoded speech is a type of degraded speech produced by separating speech into frequency channels, extracting the amplitude envelope within each channel, and using the envelope to modulate broadband noise in each frequency range. previous work suggests that intelligibility of noise-vocoded distorted speech improves with practice, and plateaus after approximately 20 sentences (Davis et al., 2005; Huyck & Johnsrude, 2012; Peelle & Wingfield, 2005). Although some have tested up to 50 sentences (Erb et al., 2013), we are unaware of systematic studies of prolonged (multi-session) training. The short duration over which perceptual learning has been examined contrasts with learning seen in cochlear implant users, who often take several months to fully adapt to their maximal speech perception accuracy (Gantz et al., 1993; Heydebrand et al., 2007; Knutson et al., 1991; Pisoni, 2000). This project will test whether intelligibility of noise-vocoded speech can be improved to a higher accuracy through early ...
