国名译词 "西班牙" 的成立 ; The establishment of the translation of the country name "Xi Ban Ya"(西班牙)
Abstract:
At the end of the Ming Dynasty, along with the great discoveries of Western geography, knowledge of Western geography began to be introduced into China. The Jesuits represented by Matteo Ricci and Giulio Aleni took the lead in translating foreign geographical names into Chinese characters, and introduced Western geographical knowledge into the vision of Chinese readers through media carriers such as maps and geography books. However, after the 18th century, following the KangXi, YongZheng, and QianLong ban on education, the introduction of Western learning was interrupted. It was not until Robert Morrison and other Protestant missionaries came to China to reuse the resources of the Chinese translation of the Jesuits, and the long-covered knowledge of Western geography and a large number of translations of country names were re-introduced into China. Afterwards, Chinese intellectuals who "opened their eyes to see the world" conducted a summary and selection of geographical knowledge and translations of country names. Finally, after the Opium War ended, through the efforts of authors from various countries, the finalization and unification of the translation of national names with serious differences were completed. Nowadays, the country name "Spain (Spanish: España)" can be written as the Chinese character "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) in both Chinese and Japanese. But before the translation of national names were completely finalized, in different periods and stages, "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) had a variety of translated word forms. From the perspective of cultural interaction, this article sorts out and counts the translated word forms of "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) in various types of Chinese and Japanese documents in the period of about 300 years from the late Ming and early Qing to the "May Fourth New Cultural Movement". Discuss its usage and translation characteristics at various stages, and focus on the use of the country name translation "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) by the Qing government and the Republic of China government in diplomatic situations and the influence of diplomatic materials on the translation process. Finally, starting from the introduction of the translation of the country name "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) in Japanese literature, the process of finalizing the country name translation "Xi Ban Ya" (西班牙) in China and Japan is discussed from the theory of language contact and the Chinese character vocabulary system. ; 陶徳民教授古稀記念号
