: New data on speech breathing upon results from online Magnetic Resonance Imaging ...

... : The paper presents preliminary results of the pilot project on experimental research of speech breathing when reading different types of texts. Original algorithm for online MRI imaging of the lungs has been adapted for the study of speech breathing. The algorithm was originally developed for the diagnosis of respiratory disorders in case of pathological changes in the lungs. Informative online MRI images of the lungs were obtained while reading short texts (prose and poetry), as well as breathing at rest. Frame-by-frame averaging of MRI images provided information on the average volume of the lungs during speaking, and their spectral analysis made it possible to assess breath’s rhythm. It was revealed that as the transition from rest to reading a verse progress, the average volume of air in the lungs increases substantially, and changes insignificantly when producing speech signal. In this case, breathing also ceases to be rhythmic. With the transition from poetry to prose, an additional, but less ...
