Abstract: This SPR study aims to shed light on the structural properties of Mandarin Chinese ditransitve constructions. Based on a theoretical analysis we assume that there are two basic types. Type 1: [Ba NP (Theme)] Vgei NP (Recipient) [NP (Theme)]; type 2: [gei NP (Recipient)] V NP (Theme) [gei NP (Recipient)]. Both types allow two options with respect to linearization, i.e., either the theme NP precedes the recipient NP, or vice versa, with the V always between theme NP and recipient NP. Both structures differ on the functional level. In type 1, gei forms a unit with the verb, in type 2, gei is an independent unit, irrespective of linearization. There are controversial findings with respect to which type is more frequent. We test this analysis using a self-paced reading paradigm, in which we manipulate the way the linguistic material is presented.
