Abstract:
; Publishing a university course is a well-established practice in the academic world. It raises issues full of interest to linguists as well as to historians of science. This paper aims at describing the published course as a genre: we investigate the boundaries of this complex cultural object and we reflect on its characteristics. First, based on a corpus of university courses published since the end of the 18th century, we offer a taxonomy of attested editorial configurations and we discuss the main problems faced when editing this type of writings. Then, we focus on a particular case within this general overview: how a professor, Louis Havet, and a listener, Antoine Meillet, collaborated in order to edit a course in Latin metrics taught at the Sorbonne in 1887.
