HOW HEALTHY AGING IS DEMONSTRATED THROUGH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDENT SENIOR PARTNERSHIP
Lee, J; Katz, A. - : Oxford University Press, 2018
Abstract: This poster presentation will demonstrate how employing the most compelling strategies will foster interactive learning, confidence in interprofessional care provision, and enthusiasm for older adults, as well as dispelling the myths of ageism, addressing negative stereotypes and foster a sense of optimism and engagement in providing care for our aged population. The Student Senior Partnership Program (SSPP) focuses on teaching students factors associated with healthy aging as well as how to work in interprofessional teams. SSPP strives to develop interprofessional skills, connect students with seniors in the community, and change their perceptions of healthy aging. This program of interprofessional team care focuses on attitudes, knowledge and relationship skills towards aging and older adults. Faculty provided training to the senior volunteers so they were prepared to function in a role as “teachers” to students from six professional disciplines (Medicine, Social Work, OT, PT, Dentistry, Pharmacy) through meaningful dialogue focused on healthy aging. The program involves 5 interactions with the senior volunteer: an orientation workshop, three home visits, and a closing workshop. Each student completed 3 reflections corresponding to the respective home visit. The program is in its second year and results from the pre and post survey using the Geriatrics Attitudes Scale (GAS) demonstrated that students are improving on survey metrics. In addition, many students report having greater appreciation for other disciplines and understanding healthy aging. Survey results as well as student reflections will be reported.
