Abstract:
As the U.S. population becomes more linguistically and culturally diverse, psychologists must meet the increased demand for culturally and linguistically informed assessments. Spanish is the most frequently spoken non-English language, and over a third of Latinx individuals in the U.S are bilingual. Yet most psychological tests were created for and normed on white, monolingual English speakers. This study examines how language and acculturation factors impact the cognitive assessment of Spanish-English bilingual individuals. A set of assessments will be administered to bilingual psychology undergraduates, once in English and again in Spanish, using a repeated-measures design. Unlike pre-existing research, the proposed study will utilize academic language proficiency rather than self-reported or conversational proficiency, making the study more relevant for psychological evaluations with the growing number of bilingual individuals in the United States.
