Um ihre Funktion zu bestimmen, werden die Konstruktionen und das Adverbiale gerade im Rahmen einer funktionalen Grammatik hinsichtlich ihrer prozeduralen Leistung und ihrer Verwendung in authentischer Kommunikation analysiert. Die Grundlage für die Untersuchung bildet ein Korpus, das aus Verwendungen der Konstruktionen in Texten und Diskursen besteht, die aus verschiedenen Quellen wie den Korpora der geschriebenen und gesprochenen Sprache des Instituts für deutsche Sprache, Transkriptbänden oder dem Internet stammen. Formal zusammengesetzt aus dem finiten Seinsverb, einer Verschmelzung aus Präposition und definitem Artikel im Dativ und einem substantivierten Infinitiv sind am-, beim- und im- Konstruktion syntaktisch als Kopulakonstruktion mit einer Präpositionalphrase als Prädikativkomplement einzustufen. Die Konstruktionen dienen dem Ausdruck von Unabgeschlossenheit und realisieren damit imperfektiven Aspekt. Die am-Konstruktion verbalisiert eine statische Konstellation der Involviertheit in eine Handlung und kann der Begründung von Un-/Verfügbarkeit dienen, zur Intensivierung genutzt werden oder im Erzählen den Planbruch oder die Basis des Planbruchs verbalisieren. Die beim-Konstruktion drückt eine Befasstheit mit einer Handlung aus, die in konkret-lokaler Verwendung kommuniziert, dass diese am typischen Ort der Handlung ausgeführt wird. Sie kann als Inzidenzrahmen verwendet werden oder zur Kommunikation von (eingeschränkter) Verfügbarkeit. Die im-Konstruktion verbalisiert bestehende, fortschreitende Entwicklungen und Vorgänge in ihrer Umsetzung, deren Ergebnisse noch ausstehen. Die dabei-Konstruktion, gebildet aus dem zusammengesetzten Verweiswort dabei und einem zu-Infinitiv, verhält sich syntaktisch wie eine Korrelatverbindung und ermöglicht daher im Gegensatz zu den anderen Konstruktionen die systematische Realisierung von verbalen Komplementen. Sie wird genutzt, um das unmittelbare Handeln innerhalb einer komplexeren Handlung in der Phase der Umsetzung zu verorten. Mit dem Adverbiale gerade wird die Unmittelbarkeit des Vollzugs, des Abschlusses oder der Umsetzung eines Prozesses bzw. einer Handlung im jeweiligen Verweisraum fokussiert. ; The subject of this study is the use of German progressive constructions, i.e. the am-construction (“Ich bin am Arbeiten.”), the beim-construction (“Er ist beim Einkaufen.”), the dabei-construction (“Wir sind dabei, das zu prüfen.”), the im-construction (“Das Haus ist im Werden.”), and the adverbial gerade (“Ich telefoniere gerade.”). In order to determine their function, these constructions are examined with regard to their procedural characteristics and their use in authentic communication, within the framework of functional grammar. The study is based on a corpus that consists of constructions used in discourse and texts taken from different sources, e.g. the corpora of spoken and written language of the ‘Institut für deutsche Sprache’, transcript volumes, and the internet. The am-, beim- and im-construction are formed with a finite form of the verb sein, a fusion of the preposition with a definite article in the dative case, and a nominalized infinitive so that syntactically they may be classified as predicative constructions with a prepositional phrase for predicative complement. They can be used to express an uncompleted action or process, and thereby realize imperfective aspect. The am-construction conveys a static constellation where the subject referent is involved in an action. It can be used to justify un-/availability, for emphasis, or, as part of a narration, to prepare or express the complication. The beim-construction expresses the fact that somebody is preoccupied with doing something, or, in the concrete-local use, that somebody is doing something at the typical location of the action, in order to construct an incidential basis or convey (limited) availability. The im-construction hints at existing developments and processes whose results are still expected. The dabei-construction, formed with the composite deictics dabei and an infinitive with zu as a prefix, shares the syntactic properties of matrix constructions, thus being the only progressive construction that allows the systematic use of verbal complements. It locates the immediate action within the range of a more complex action in the phase of execution. The adverbial gerade focusses on the immediacy of the execution, the completion or the realization of a process or action in the respective deictic space.
