Abstract:
; This thesis is concentrated on the hybrid cultural identity of second-generation-migrants who work as journalists for the transcultural Viennese city magazine “biber”. Their parents immigrated from Turkey, Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina to Austria; the journalists came to Austria as children or were born here. By growing up in a bicultural environment that is influenced by their social surroundings and by the cultural resources of their parents’ as well as the Austrian culture, they created an individual, hybrid and always altering “in between”-identity. If we define journalism as a cultural process within the circle of media-related production and reception of certain meanings, journalists induce parts of their hybrid identity into their journalistic texts. The reader, by receiving the texts, can use these identity-choices to construct his/her own (hybrid) identity, or refuses them. In the empirical part of the thesis six journalists of “biber” were interviewed in order to measure their hybrid identity. Then, in the course of a qualitative content analysis of their articles, it was examined what kind of identity-choices the texts provide (on the content level) and by which linguistic and visual elements they are transported. The study results show that the (hybrid) identity-choices in the texts are mainly provided by personal portraits of second-generation-migrants, by articles that focus on the “biber”-journalists themselves, and by mixed language-elements. Therefore, the “biber”-magazine plays a decisive role for the constitution and assurance of the journalists’ identity, and provides identity- and identification-choices to the readers. Due to the fact that science hasn’t yet given much attention to migrants as producers in the media, this thesis can be seen as an initial contribution.
