Abstract:
The UMBC lead DAML project began with the goal to design and prototype critical software components enabling developers to create intelligent software agents capable of understanding and processing information and knowledge encoded in DAML and other semantically rich markup languages. The project was led by Tim Finin (UMBC) who served as the PI, CO-PI Jim Mayfield (JHU) and CO-PI Benjamin Grosof (MIT). The work had three main research thrusts: exploring and evaluating how semantic web technology can be integrated into and used by agent based systems, developing techniques for building information retrieval systems using semantic web data and knowledge and developing and evaluating better rule based systems for the semantic web. This final report describes the most significant results and provides a complete list of papers that provide more information of the research carried out and detailed results. ; Sponsored by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA Order No. K528. Prepared in cooperation with Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. Report contains collection of papers and journal articles: ITtalks: a case study in the Semantic Web and DAML+OWL by R. S. Scott et al; Search Engines for Semantic Web Knowledge by Tim Finin & Li Ding; Characterizing the Semantic Web on the Web by Li Ding & Tim Finin; SweetJess: Inferencing in Situated Courteous RuleML via Translation to and from Jess Rules by B. Grosof et al; Extending the SweetDeal Approach for E-Procurement using SweetRules and RuleML by S. Bhansali & B. Grosof; Using Semantic Web technology in Multi-Agent Systems: a case study in the TAGA trading agent environment by Y. Zou et al; and F-OWL: an Inference Engine for the Semantic Web by Y. Zou et al.
