Bilingual education in majority English speaking countries: case studies in Australia and Canada
Abstract: In this paper, topics related to bilingual education in Canada and Australia are presented. We are focusing on why people choose to participate in intense language learning models such as immersion or 50-50 models for their children. We are also interested in understanding the context of who is participating and for what purposes languages are learnt in these programs in countries which are predominantly English-speaking. From interviews with school leaders, teachers, and the analysis of documents that promote these programs, we will discuss preliminary data on how, when, for what purposes bilingual programs have emerged, who is involved, and what are the consequences of having new bilingual schools in these two countries.
