Linguistic relativity in language production: The case for modal verbs ...
Abstract:
Many studies into linguistic relativity have focused on language systems as a whole (differences between speakers of different languages). Those studies that did not and looked at the use of particular elements within a language, have mostly been focusing on influences of language perception. This raises the question whether production of language can affect cognition as well. One way to address this question is by moving Dutch participants to produce sentences containing a modal verb associated with either intrinsic or extrinsic motivation ("willen" [to want to] and "moeten" [to have to], respectively). If there are any effects of linguistic relativity in language production, we might expect that using one of these verbs over the other can influence participants' sense of autonomy and intrinsic motivation. If we then administer an unrelated follow-up task and test if participants show increased performance and persistence, we could indirectly determine whether such cognitive effects have indeed occurred ...
