Blog Assignment
Abstract:
Course Code, Name, Level and Enrollment: EEB384H1S 2020, Diversity of Amphibians and Reptiles, third-year undergraduate, approx. 50 students. ; Learning Outcomes: gain experience reading and thinking critically about original scientific papers; discover and share herpetological research; hone analytical writing skills. ; Other Notes: assignment description includes rubric. Writers are provided with examples of existing herpetological blogs, and also model assignments from previous years. ; This scaffolded assignment requires students to write about a scientific research question, result, or discovery that is primarily herpetological in nature (i.e., reptiles or amphibians should play a central role, not a peripheral one), and to incorporate discussion of peer-reviewed scientific literature in a short essay. Students are strongly encouraged to choose a topic of genuine personal interest: either a topic covered in class or lab that merits deeper investigation, or a completely unrelated herpetological topic that reflects a student's own passions. Students complete an outline of their blog first, receive feedback, then submit a final version. The 600-900 word essay should be written in a blog format, targeting an audience with advanced university-level education, but without specialized knowledge or expertise. The blog should provide an original, critical evaluation of published scientific research, not simply a report on a topic or organism. For example, rather than writing an encyclopedic report on “the saltwater crocodile,” writers should consider presenting a critical analysis of recent research into the complex communication modes and mating behaviours of living crocodylians.
