Abstract:
This year’s review is divided into five sections: 1. General Translation Theory, where second editions of three major works which show the development of the field: The Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies , The Translator’s Invisibility and Introducing Translation Studies ; 2. The History of Literary Translation, where the highlight is the publication of Volume 1 of the Oxford History of Literary Translation in English covering the period to 1550, but where other volumes look at religious translation in the Middle Ages, the translation of classics and the work and lives of Dryden and other seventeenth-century English poet-translators; 3. New Perspectives on Literary Translation. Work this year examines the cultural transfer of poetry between Italian and English, and the importance of the identity of the translator and the role of the translator’s consciousness; 4. Translation and a Global Culture. Two books focus on Africa and one on recent developments in translation studies in China; 5. New Departures. A special issue of The Translator is devoted to translation and music, a special issue of META to translation and the visual. Other books focus on community interpreting, including sign language.
