Mehr Chunks! ...
Shadrova, Anna.
... : The thesis first sets out to clarify the terminology for fully and partly lexicalized units (chunks) and their theoretical implications. Further their status in language – both langue and parole – is discussed: Which functions do chunks fulfill in spoken and written language? What is their cognitive status? Recent studies show that chunks play an important role even in relatively flexible, seemingly non-lexicalized structures of language. What does this mean for describing constructions? Concluding from the discussion on terminology, functions and the prevalent position of chunks in wide parts of language I suggest to view them as a Basic Level Category of natural language: As actual communicative units with the capacity to evoke whole frames and realize routines, which are requirements unreached by words and abstractions independently. Finally, a sketch of a possible integration into Construction Grammar is being presented. ...
