Abstract:
; This investigation presents a case study regarding a project of adult education in alphabetization and literacy in a non-native language. The investigation aims to reflect the responses of a volunteer collective group from a social and educational point of view. The theoretic frame analyses alphabetization and literacy as skills and practices connected with the social environment and its relevance in educational context. Within the research, it has been considered three elements: the students, the group of educators and the classes. The methodology adopted were semi-structured interviews with five women and one man, to understand their sociolinguistic and sociodemographic profiles as well as their perceptions about the project. In addition, through the analysis of class reports, it was sought to understand the development of the classes over the time and which aspects educators value. It was noticed that students speak a wide variety of languages and there are different levels of literacy skills. The results of the study show that the group provides opportunities for language contacts in Portuguese and literacy practices contextualized in students’ life. Sociability represents a highly valued factor, and it is seen that the learning motivation for reading and writing is significant. The availability and organization of the volunteer group do not present the best conditions for developing alphabetization and literacy in a non-native language, even though it is observed that the current teaching practices provide learning recognized by the students.
