Science in the French immersion elementary classroom: teacher comfort, self-efficacy, and anxiety

Abstract: This thesis was completed and submitted at Nipissing University, and is made freely accessible through the University of Toronto’s TSpace repository ; Many French immersion elementary teachers experience hesitance or anxiety when it comes to teaching science. This thesis analyzes some of the reasons why this hesitancy exists. To answer this question, a general qualitative approach was used. Seven French immersion elementary teachers were interviewed about their experiences teaching science. Six self-identified as being anxious or hesitant to teach science, while one self-identified as being comfortable teaching science. An autoethnography was included to contrast my experience with that of the participants. Each participant was interviewed 2-3 times using a semi-structured approach. Participants were encouraged to provide artifacts that might shed light on their feelings towards science. Thematic analysis was used to present results. Participants identified six major factors that shaped their view of science and influenced their hesitancy towards teaching it, namely: the challenges of teaching in a second language environment; early experiences in science (with the sub-themes of lack of science in elementary and influence of teachers); ill-preparedness (with the sub-themes of science methods and professional development); resources; time; and literacy and numeracy. The implications of this study suggest that French immersion elementary teachers in Atlantic Canada may benefit from increased professional development and an integrated curriculum. ; M.Ed.
