Female Puerto Rican Entrepreneurs in the Aftermath of Hurricane Maria: Resourcefulness, Resilience, Sustainability
Benjamin, Lily. - : The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2020
Abstract: Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, resulting in significant losses of life, livelihood, and infrastructure. This tragedy exacerbated the financial turmoil to an island already in crisis, where 44.9% of the population lives in poverty. Puerto Rico’s small businesses make up 99.7% of all businesses, which provides its residents with an opportunity to foster entrepreneurial activity to improve standards of living, increase innovation, and drive wealth. The purpose of this study is to understand female entrepreneurs in the midst of adversity. Rwanda’s female entrepreneurship is examined to see how female empowerment in a male-dominated society has directly contributed to the recovery of the country’s economy. Using a phenomenological qualitative approach and an entrepreneurial governance framework to design this study’s instrumentation, 12 native female Puerto Rican entrepreneurs, with businesses since 2016, were interviewed. The results show how these entrepreneurs strategically face challenges by going into cultural disfluency, while leaning on their faith that potentiate their resilience and female agency to drive sustainability and growth strategies. Also, this study expands the profile of the female Puerto Rican entrepreneur by discussing how their relationships with their husbands, partners, fathers, and God help drive their mission and support their communities. A societal determinant entrepreneurship framework was proposed, which may be tested across cultures, exposing vulnerabilities in entrepreneurial support. Further quantitative research is needed to substantiate and generalize the findings of this study. Descriptive and comparative research methodologies may demonstrate the positive impact that female entrepreneurship may make to Puerto Rico’s lengthy economic recession, assisting in the island’s financial recovery.
