Narra. A cognitive visual art, to the rhythm of paragraph length of literary texts ; Narra.
Tardif, Claude Patricia. - : HAL CCSD, 2020
In: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-03129627 ; Art et histoire de l'art. Université Paris 8, 2020. Français (2020)
Abstract: Olga Kisseleva [rapporteure hors jury] ; The Narra thesis is part of a research-creation project, creation in visual arts and research in literary digital humanities. It is based on the idea that a form informs and results from a dynamic. And, the shape of the text – when you do not read it, when you see it –, it is its linear paragraphs that create it according to their length, measured with the Narra 2.0 software. This morphology of the literary text, apart from editorial enunciation, the visual arts make it visible, in an instant. Narra's works thus operate on a double register: that of the observation of the artworks and that of the exhibition of a property of the text that they reveal, its rhythm according to the length of its visual sequences which are the paragraphs. Art reveals and shows here an ignored rhythm of literary text. It has a cognitive function in concreto. It is a tool for discovering a rhythm which is neither that of writing nor of reading, but of the visual rhythm of the text itself according to the length of its paragraphs and chapters. Knowing that the paragraph is a thematic unit, the realizations are a way of observing how the sequences (paragraphs and chapters) develop, therefore are chained over time, how the author has more or less developed his units of meaning. This thesis poses a new paradigm of the literary text as an ongoing dynamic process that can be observe thanks to the works of Narra from its morphology. This thesis opens up a field of research in literary numerical studies which will make it possible to answer the questions raised, in particular that of knowing whether certain mathematical laws partly model the morphology of the text shaped by the length (or duration) of its paragraphs.
