Way beyond gonna, wanna, kinda, cause or innit, some fiction authors take advantage of the important discrepancy that exists in English between sound and spelling in order to create a new way of writing, a brand new code that plays a significant role in the definition of characters, who then write as they speak. With lexemes presented in an innovative way, readers actually hear the characters' voices as they read the texts, which can make reading difficult. This way of writing, sometimes close to a foreign language, represents a challenge for translators, in particular when translating into French, a language that has a reputation for being more conservative as far deviations from the norm are concerned. The analysis presented here concerns three particular novels the authors of which have used an eye dialect quite extensively: Flowers for Algernon by D. Keyes, Forrest Gump by W. Groom, and The Book of Dave by W. Self. Comparing the different strategies that can be used by translators, the analysis investigates how it is possible to maintain the innovative character of the source text while respecting the characteristics of the target linguistic system, the translator's freedom to be creative, as well as the constraints imposed by publishers. ; Cet article propose une réflexion sur la façon dont le dialecte visuel, tel que défini originellement par Krapp (1926), a été et peut être traduit dans le cadre de traductions de l'anglais vers le français. Bien au-delà des bien connus gonna, wanna, kinda, cause, innit etc., certains auteurs de fiction exploitent en effet la discordance très forte qui existe en anglais entre la graphie et la phonie afin de créer une orthographe nouvelle, un système de codage tout à fait novateur qui participe alors à la création d'êtres de papier singuliers, qui écrivent comme ils parlent et se donnent donc à entendre plutôt qu'à lire au lecteur, avec des lexèmes présentés sous une forme innovante, rendant la lecture parfois difficile. Cette façon d'écrire, qui invite une sorte de langue étrangère à laquelle le lecteur n'est guère habitué, représente un défi pour le traducteur, notamment lorsqu'il s'agit de traduire vers le français, langue réputée normative, bien plus frileuse que l'anglais dès qu'il s'agit de s'éloigner de la norme. Au travers de l'étude de trois romans faisant la part belle au dialecte visuel (Flowers for Algernon de D. Keyes, Forrest Gump de W. Groom, et The Book of Dave de W. Self), l'article propose donc une réflexion sur la façon dont ce type d'écrits a été et peut être traduit en essayant de concilier respect du texte et de son caractère innovant, acclimatation au système linguistique de la langue d'arrivée, liberté créative du traducteur, et contraintes imposées par le monde de l'édition.
