The manuscript Harley 3376. Comment to the letter B ; Il manoscritto Harley 3376. Commento alla lettera B
In: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-03473693 ; 2021 (2021)
Abstract: The text is written in English; it is preceded by an introduction in English that explains the typology of the text, its aims, structure and background. ; This paper contains a database dedicated to the transcription and comment of the glosses beginning with the letter B in the manuscript Harley 3376 (British Library). It is a glossary of the 10th century, presumably written in Worchester; it is partly based on glosses taken from older glossaries available at the library of the Worchester Cathedral, and partly on original glosses added by the creator of this glossary. The glossed terms are given in Latin (but there are some latinized words taken from Greek, Hebrew, Old French, Old English and others), while the interpretation is usually formulated in Latin, but in one third of the cases there is an Old English interpretation (often in addition to the Latin one). The present work presents and discusses the single glosses, proposes an interpretation when they are obscure or unclear, and discusses their possible origin by considering both the literary sources and the earlier glossaries, from which the gloss could come from. The overall analysis shows that the compiler of the glossary was not a simple ‘collector’ of glosses taken from the texts he had access to in his library; on the contrary, it was a highly educated person that made a conspicuous personal contribution, by adding glosses on terms that had not been discussed in earlier glossaries, but also by enriching the glosses he took from his sources.
