; Accented speech has always triggered reactions and can be a factor of discrimination. The current globalization favors intergroup exchanges, allowing for more frequent situations of exolingual communication. In this context, listeners are confronted with a broad variety of accents, both native and non-native. The present study investigates the perception of native and non-native French accents among three groups of native French-speaking listeners who were asked to rate the suitability of the speakers for three different jobs, using the matched guised technique. Our results show a marked hierarchy among French accents, that doesn’t set native accents against non-native ones, but rather suggests that listeners evaluate accents according to their social value and the social ideologies they tend to convey.
