Abstract:
On examine les caractéristiques matérielles et discursives des actes des trois sessions du Congrès international pour l’extension et la culture de la langue française (Belgique, 1905-1913). La fin du xixe-tout début du xxe siècle, période particulière de la « guerre des langues », correspond à la prise de conscience d’une perte d’influence du français dans le monde et à des interrogations sur les moyens d'y faire face ainsi qu’à l’émergence de la francophonie comme notion pertinente d’une politique linguistique. La situation belge suscite des questions particulièrement vives quant au statut des dialectes et parlers régionaux dans l’enseignement du français. ; We examine the material and discursive characteristics of the International Congress for the extension and culture of the French language’s three sessions’ proceedings (Belgium, 1905-1913). It became clear at the end of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, a unique time period in the context of the “language wars”, that French was starting to lose its influence worldwide, thus provoking reflections upon the means to maintain it; while francophony first appeared as a relevant notion in language politics. The situation in Belgium raises specific issues regarding the status of dialects and regional varieties for French language teaching.
