Abstract:
This study aimed to explore the following question: How can I improve my writing instruction to support an inclusive learning environment in my French Immersion classroom? I used the action research method to study my own practice. I firstly selected evidence-based writing instruction strategies and supports that I could integrate into my classroom as part of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. After surveying existing research, I chose to use strategy instruction to teach my students and offered them the use of a word processor and online French-English dictionary to complete their assignments. Over the course of four weeks, I implemented a story writing unit in my Grade 5 French immersion classroom in Southern Vancouver Island. During the implementation, I kept a researcher journal, and collected exit slips and writing samples from my students. My findings show that strategy instruction, coupled with UDL supports improved the story writing of all students who participated in the research. ...
