Based on clinical experience, it highlights the way in which psychic exile is revived through geographical exile, which raises, for each individual, the question of “the foreign” both within and outside ourselves. The author argues that this psychic exile is linked to the original separation inherent to all human beings that is re-actualised whenever a boundary is crossed, whenever we are displaced – whether it is in relinquishment, mourning or geographical migration. The upheaval these crossings cause requires a work of symbolisation that necessarily draws on our specific cultural frameworks. However, what about those people who have precisely been forced to leave the world of their language, its myths and cultural references? In fact, through the gap introduced by his or her difference, the encounter with a person from another cultural background highlights the difficulty of thinking about the connections between the singular and the collective, between psyche and culture. In this way, the present article opens up the complex questions faced by clinicians working with displaced people and confronted with linguistic and cultural difference. Its theoretical orientation is psychoanalytic and anthropological. ; La visée de ce texte est de repenser la clinique de l’exil et la manière d’aller vers cet autre que l’on appelle l’étranger, sans rompre ni fétichiser sa différence. L’auteur met l’accent à partir de son expérience sur la manière dont l’exil psychique se réactualise à travers l’exil géographique, non sans renvoyer chaque sujet à l’étranger en lui et hors de lui. Selon son hypothèse, cet exil psychique, qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la séparation originaire inhérente à l’humain, se ravive dans tout franchissement d’une frontière, tout déplacement, qu’il s’agisse d’un renoncement, d’un deuil, d’un changement de pays. La secousse qu'il suscite nécessite d'en passer par un travail de symbolisation via des repères culturels. Or, qu'en est-il de celui qui est amené à quitter l'univers qui abrite sa langue, ses mythes et ses références culturelles ? Le sujet provenant d’une autre culture ne fait que révéler, à travers l’écart qu’introduit sa différence, cette difficulté à penser ce qui articule le singulier et le collectif, le psychisme et la culture. Tel est le cheminement qui se déploie dans cet article à travers lequel s’ouvrent des questions complexes qui se posent à la clinique du fait du déplacement des hommes, et face à la différence des langues et des cultures. L’approche est orientée par la psychanalyse et l’anthropologie.
