В ней представлен анализ трудных для понимания слов, имеющих сложную историю формирования семантики и символики, которые, несмотря на культурные наслоения (в том числе многопланово-символические христианские), хранят в своей языковой памяти древние смыслы, не доступные нашим современникам, для которых многие феномены традиционной русской культуры уже едва понятны и напоминают тайнопись, нуждающуюся в дешифровке. В публикацию вошли этимологические этюды, посвященные отдельным словам, лексикологические исследования, анализ ряда ключевых византийских и древнерусских понятий, представлены основные параметры средневековой идеи образа, рассмотрена символика названий некоторых византийско-славянских сборников. ; For correct understanding of medieval Christian keywords, it is necessary to restore the original meaning of symbols and images. The difficulty of understanding the meaning lies in the fact that, in accordance with a medieval outlook, symbol-image and symbol-epithet have the ability to flow from one image to another, and then slip away, replaced by a new, sometimes the opposite, meaning. This leads in the best case to the simplified understanding, and at worst to the erroneous one, and, eventually, to oblivion all senses. Moreover, medieval symbols and images are also able to simultaneously accommodate a variety of meanings. Contacting with medieval characters requires not only skills, but a deep dive into the conceptual system, as well as the religious attitude; both that and another has its own tradition and assumes a spiritual experience. In my article, I am representing analysis of difficult-to-understand Russian words with complex (Greek-Slavic) history of the formation of their semantics and symbolism. These words, despite the cultural accretions, are stored the ancient meanings in their linguistic memory, but these are not available to our contemporaries, for whom many of the phenomena of traditional Russian culture has barely understandable and need to be deciphered. For these scientific goals, I used historical and lexicographic, and comparative linguistic methods. I analyzed some of the key ancient Russian and Byzantine concepts, the essence and basic parameters of the medieval idea of image, as well as symbolism of titles of some Byzantine-Slavic anthologies. I show that the idea of the image was a key to the ancient Slavs, and it had its differences from the European. It had a special significance of image understanding on which the first teachers of the Slavs Cyrill and Methodius were based in their mission. I pay special attention to the study of the semantics of the terms, the key to Christian tradition (being, power, Abraham’s bosom, the terms derived from the words ‘God’ and ‘good’, etc.). Analyzing titles of Byzantine-Slavic anthologies, I show the deep relationship between ideas about God and the semantics of words related to visual ways of its perception (image, light, eye). Symbolism of the ship (the state, flock, etc.), as well as of Christ and Virgin (pearl, mother of pearl) was also essential to the Old Russian worldview. I trace the ways in which syntax of the Old Testament was implemented by the language of the New Testament and spread first in translated literature, and then penetrated into the literary language of ancient Russia. I conclude allowance for peculiarities of syntax of the Old Testament in its specific Slavonic and Russian implementation, could to clarify the ‘dark places’ of Synodic translation and requires correction in dictionaries of Old Slavonic and Old Russian languages.
