Syntacticizing intonation? Tag questions in Glasgow Scots
Jamieson, E. - : Walter De Gruyter, 2020
Abstract: This paper presents the results of a perception experiment investigating the acceptability of rising and falling intonation contours in a particular tag construction in Glasgow Scots. I show that intonation contour does not affect speakers’ judgments of the acceptability of these tags, despite important roles for intonation in the acceptability of other constructions. I thus argue, contraWiltschko & Heim (2016) and Wiltschko (2017), that the interpretation of intonation in these tags is pragmatic, and supports amodular conception of the relationship between syntax and intonation rather than the direct syntacticization of intonation in the left periphery.
