Abstract: The present experiment builds on a design from Chan and Kelly (2021) (https://osf.io/8bd3n/). Quoting from their description: “Previous studies on cross-linguistic differences of agency perception have noted that various languages have different ways of marking between accidental and intentional events. Agentive languages like English prefer to describe both types of events in an active voice and non-agentive languages like Japanese distinguish between the two types of events with the use of distinct verb forms. These linguistic differences in speech have been shown to affect how speakers perceive and remember agency, though whether similar effects can be seen when agency is depicted in other modalities have yet to be explored. In our project, we will present visual portrayals of agency through two types of co-speech gestures - character-viewpoint gestures that mimic an agent performing an action and object-viewpoint gestures that represent the motion trajectory of an object without any reference to an ...
