Abstract:
Noun-labels can be associated with perceptions of immutability and intensity of behavior (Howell et al, 2014). Noun-based labeling refers to the individual being labeled as their mental disorder; thus, creating a more pervasive, enduring, and global negative connotation towards that individual (Cuttler & Ryckman, 2019). The purpose of the proposed research is to describe how language may be related to mental health stigma. A survey containing questions about ten mental disorders will be distributed. Each disorder will be in a phrase form (noun, possessive, adjective) and have two follow-up questions to gauge participants' implied stigma. Participants will also complete one stigma scale to determine if stigma moderates the relationship between language and implied stigma. The expected finding is that disorders in the noun-phrase condition will be rated as a more enduring or a stable condition than possessive or adjective-type phrasing.
