Abstract: Purpose: to describe the performance of vocabulary in elementary and elementary school students in the city of Caicó – RN. Méthods: this is a cross-sectional study of a quantitative nature, carried out with 75 students from 3 to 7 years of age enrolled in 3 municipal schools in the municipality of Caicó-RN.The instrument applied was the Vocabulary Trial Test-TRILHAR that evaluates aspects of reception and expression. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics with mean and standard deviation; in the analytical statistic the Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to correlate the performance and the variable age, the Mann-Whitney test correlating with the sex variable and the Sperman correlation. Significant value adopted was p <0.05. Results: schooling presented better performance in receptive than in expressive triage, there was a positive correlation between age and performance in the instrument and did not have a statistically significant difference between sex and performance. Conclusions: vocabulary is important for the development and acquisition of language skills. Therefore, vocabulary screening tools aid in the identification and early treatment of children with deficits in this ability. Therefore, it is of great relevance for preventive actions in the scope of basic care, favoring more resolving and promoting a good academic and social development for these children. ; Objetivo: descrever o desempenho do vocabulário em escolares do ensino infantil e fundamental I da cidade de Caicó – RN. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal de natureza quantitativa, realizado com 75 escolares de 3 a 7 anos de idade matriculados em três escolas municipais do município de Caicó-RN. O instrumento aplicado foi o Teste de Triagem do Vocabulário -TRILHAR que avalia os aspectos da recepção e expressão. Os dados foram analisados por estatística descritiva com média e desvio-padrão, na estatística analítica foram utilizados os testes Kruskal-Wallis para correlacionar o desempenho e a variável idade, o teste Mann-Whitney correlacionando com a variável sexo e a correlação de Sperman. Valor significativo adotado foi p<0,05. Resultados: os escolares apresentaram melhor desempenhono vocabulário receptivo que no expressivo, houve correlação positiva entre a faixa etária e o desempenho no instrumento e não obteve diferença estatisticamente significante entre sexo e desempenho. Conclusões: o vocabulário é importante para o desenvolvimento e aquisição de habilidades linguísticas. Instrumentos de triagem de vocabulário auxiliam na identificação e tratamento precoce de crianças com déficits nessa habilidade. Assim, o uso deste tipo de ferramenta é de grande relevância para ações preventivas no âmbito da atenção básica, favorecendo maior resolutividade e promoção do bom desenvolvimento acaêemico e social dessas crianças.
