Audiovisual translation as orchestration of multimodal synergies: exploring expendability of interjections in English-to-Chinese film subtitling

Abstract:
This thesis provides insights into film subtitling as a process by which subtitlers orchestrate multimodal complementarities involving their subtitles, the dialogue, and the action. This is done through a study of what happens to interjections in the subtitling of English-language films into Chinese. Specifically, the thesis outlines proposals as to the factors associated with subtitler decisions to frequently omit these interjections (forms not entering into syntactic relations with other word classes, e.g. oh, hey, wow, yuk, uh-huh, psst). Adopting Systemic Functional Theory, this study analyzed two films, each with multiple versions of subtitles - The Croods (2013) with seven versions, and The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) with nine versions. While the choices to either omit or subtitle interjections may appear random, the thesis presents evidence that these choices are patterned to a considerable degree, conditioned by the multimodal synergies involved in subtitled films and an associated potential for semiotic redundancies, by the functionality of the interjections themselves, and by a consideration of the textuality of the subtitles as a text in its own right. Drawing on prior research on subtitling, interjections, and multimodality (particularly the semiotics of facial expressions and bodily gestures), the thesis explores the potential of a range of factors to systematically influence rates of interjection omission/retention. These include: (1) whether there is a Chinese translation available of the English interjection which sounds similar, (2) whether the interjection is accompanied by facial expressions and/or bodily gestures which might be considered as conveying similar meanings, and (3) the degree to which the interjection is an integral element in the co-text. In order to explore these issues, the study on which the thesis reports developed more delicate accounts of the linguistic features of interjections, and of the concurrent facial expressions and bodily gestures which may convey semiotically-correlate meanings. The thesis argues that there are grounds to view many decisions as to the subtitling of these interjections as well-motivated, sensitive responses to the role of the subtitles may play as a thread in the film as a multimodal tapestry of meanings.
