L’hybridité constitutive du Je romanesque ; First-person narrative and its pretense games: a constitutive hybridity

Abstract:
International audience ; The novel is deployed in two different universes, one real (writing, reading) and one imaginary (the fictional world). It thus opens an alterity that is not a constitutive dialogism, but an enunciative hybridity. The novelist, a person of the world, is embodied in one or more characters who are only made of language. This metamorphosis takes also place in the reader. The triple constitutive enunciation of the novelist (author-narrator-character) goes beyond the divisions of the subject or the constitutive orientation of the discourse towards others. We define it as a playful way of existing. It’s playing at being somebody else. The article analyses this “being somebody else” in the first-person narrative by highlighting the notion of pretense. Fiction is not real, pretense is what pretends to be real. The multiple avatars of the first-person narrative (from epistolary novels to autofiction), mix fiction and reality, and serve as a privileged support for enunciative embodiment. ; Depuis les écrits de Bakhtine sur le roman, on sait que ce genre monologal est éminemment dialogique. Je reviens ici sur le caractère unique de ce dialogisme : le fait qu’il se déploie dans un espace à la fois réel (l’écriture, la lecture) et imaginaire (le monde fictionnel). La bi-dimensionnalité énonciative, l’intrication de l’imaginaire et de la réalité, est donc constitutive du discours romanesque, mais elle n’est jamais aussi grande que lorsqu’elle est portée par un « Je ». L’article se penche sur la spécificité de cette « hybridité constitutive » du « Je romanesque », à travers le concept de feintise. La fiction est ce qui n’est pas réel, la feintise est ce qui prétend l’être. Le « Je de feintise » permet d’unir la bi-dimensionnalité romanesque dans un même indice personnel : le déictique renvoie à la fois à l’auteur réel, au narrateur et au personnage fictifs, mais il renvoie aussi au Tu du lecteur réel, au-delà du lecteur fictif. Le « Je romanesque » et ses multiples avatars (du roman par lettres à l’autofiction) instaurent alors des scénarisations dialogales qui brouillent les frontières entre réel et fiction. La feintise apparaît ainsi comme le support privilégié d’une hybridité énonciative, dans lequel auteur et lecteur jouent à « être autre » en s’immergeant dans des « incarnations énonciatives ».
