Abstract:
Februar 2018 auf MBC 4 in syrisch-arabischer Synchronisation täglich an Werktagen (SO-DO) ausgestrahlt. ; This paper discusses the sustained popularity of Turkish television drama or diziler (Arabic: musalsalāt) in the Arab World which has been fuelling controversy ever since the Turkish television serial Noor ("light"), known as Gümüş ("silver") in Turkey, gained unexpected success in 2008. In an interdisciplinary approach, the thesis addresses the main reasons for the undiminished appeal of this genre to the Arab audience. The dazzling success of the series is particularly due to the fact that the Turkish TV productions are dubbed into Syrian dialect instead of Modern Standard Arabic (fuṣḥā) which had been the preferred language for the Latin American telenovelas that had ruled Arab screens in the 1990s. With their deliberate choice of dubbing the serials into vernacular Syrian Arabic, MBC's directors of content had demonstrated a real "Midas touch", for various studies would subsequently reveal that the Syrian variety is more suitable than other Arabic dialects to convey cultural values and identities depicted in Turkish musalsalāt. The cultural, geographical, historical and religious proximity between the Arab World and Turkey is a significant contributor to the constant enthusiastic acclaim by the Arab audience: people from Morocco to Yemen are familiar with the lifestyles, traditions, mentalities and characters portrayed in the Turkish TV-exports; these depictions as well as the actors' gestures generate a high level of acceptance of the storylines. Moreover, acceptance and credibility reside in the plots being set in a Muslim environment; the protagonists are shown performing religious rituals (e.g. at weddings and funerals) which, in turn, triggers the audiences' identification with the leading characters - a factor that is seen by media commentators as the key to the thriving success of Turkish television drama. Last but not least, the Turkish TV productions owe their success to their focus on women, i.e. to the representation of female characters as well as the portrayal of gender / spousal relations. The main female characters mostly represent a synthesis of modernity and traditionalism; the modern lifestyle they enjoy appears as a way of life that is accessible to the average viewer, not only to celebrities. Consequently, the Turkish TV serials, despite being subject to censorship, address sensitive aspects in relationships that stir controversy in Turkey as well as in the Arab World with topics involving romantic gestures in public, premarital sex, incidents of abortion, adultery, divorce, alcohol consumption etc. In addition to the analysis of reasons behind the phenomenon of Arab audiences remaining glued to the TV, this paper discusses - based on the example of the Turkish serial Cesur ve Güzel (literally translated into Žәsūr w әž-Žamīla) - the social effects of Turkish TV products on Arab viewers as well as the impact their dubbing has on the prestige of the different Arabic varieties. This serial, consisting of 32 episodes in its original version and dubbed into Syrian Arabic, was aired between September 10th, 2017 and February 22nd, 2018; it could be watched on a daily basis on workdays - i.e. Sunday to Thursday - on MBC 4 channel. Against the backdrop of Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ playing the main role, this television drama lends itself to a closer examination, for it is precisely this actor who had fuelled the "Arab female gaze" and triggered Noor mania respectively, earning himself the sobriquet "Brad Pitt of the Middle East". The theoretical background of this thesis is mainly based on the concept of popular culture as vehicle and source of soft power. Focus is put on the relations between countries of the Arab world and Turkey, while the main methodological framework combines content analysis, i.e. the analysis of episodes in terms of linguistic features and the representation of interpersonal relations and their impact on the Arab TV audience, incl. the examination and interpretation of comments of viewers posted in various internet fora.
