: Puerto Rico houses a linguistic phenomenon that has largely went unstudied: it is the only country in the Hispanic world where the velar fricative [x] is used as a pronunciation of the phoneme /r/ on an over-individual level. This thesis, which is based heavily on empirical research, deals with the genesis, development, synchronic dia-systematic markedness, and subjective perception of this phonetic variant. After exploring the origin of this variation, it then focuses on data specifically compiled for this research, analyzing the socio-linguistic distribution of the velar pronunciation within the speech of sixty puertorican speakers. The investigated aspects are the acoustic features, the phonotactic distribution and the role of different social factors such as gender, age, regional origin, socio-economic status and the educational level of the speaker. The second part of the research investigates awareness, perception, and evaluation of the phenomenon, which turns out to be strongly stigmatized. ...
