Abstract:
One the great milestones of childhood is learning to read. Successful reading development depends upon the orchestration of several early literacy skills. Phonological awareness has been identified as one of the foundational early literacy skills, necessary for successful reading. Young children’s phonological awareness is highly predictive of their ability to learn to read. Children with high levels of phonological awareness are likely to learn to read with ease however, children with lower levels of phonological awareness are likely to struggle. Early primary teachers can use the predictability of phonological awareness as a preventative measure to decrease the number and severity of potential word level reading difficulties. Phonological awareness instruction in early primary classrooms can benefit all students, harm no students, and significantly shift the reading trajectory for some students.
