Abstract:
Aristotle's term katharsis is one of the most distinguished yet most controversial in the history of literary criticism. This study is designed to provide the reader with the information necessary to draw an informed conclusion about the meaning of the term in Aristotle's Poetics. It provides, first, a thorough account of the term in Greek letters from Homer through Aristotle. All instances of katharsis and related words based on kathar- are analyzed and lexically classified, excepting those in the Hippocratic writings where only representative examples are recorded and discussed. Second, it provides a history of the critical debate about katharsis, including an historical account of the translation and interpretation of the term in the Poetics from the Middle Ages through the twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to what are identified as the four major theories about katharsis: those of moral purification, medical purgation, structural purification, and intellectual clarification. Third, the study provides a discussion of the relationship between the four aforementioned theories and the Greek evidence uncovered in the study of katharsis. Fourth and finally, it provides a select bibliography of references and sources as well as a retrospective bibliography of scholarship on the Poetics from 1953-1983. Other extant bibliographies are cited to cover scholarship prior to 1953. ; Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1984. ; Aristotle's term katharsis is one of the most distinguished yet most controversial in the history of literary criticism.
