«Эмма» Джейн Остен: к вопросу о литературном происхождении имени героини ; “Emma” by Jane Austen: to the issue of the literary origin of the character’s name

Abstract:
В литературной ономастике до сих пор уделялось мало внимания происхождению имен персонажей в произведениях Джейн Остен, в том числе, героини романа «Эмма». Мы выдвигаем гипотезу о том, что на выбор имени Эммы Вудхаус повлияла поэма Мэтью Прайора «Генри и Эмма». Связь между романом «Эмма» и поэмой «Генри и Эмма» обнаруживается как на сюжетном, так и на психологическом уровне. Героини обоих произведений подвергаются тем же испытаниям и делают тот же выбор. ; By this time, the functioning of the names of Jane Austen’s work characters has been left without much attention. In particular, the reasons of the naming the main character in “Emma” are still unclear. I put forward a hypothesis that the choice of a name for Emma Woodhouse was effected by Matthew Prior’s poem “Emma”. A connection between the novel “Emma” and the poem “Henry and Emma” can be found both at the level of the plot and at the psychological level. The heroines of both stories pass the same test and make the same choice.
