; This work proposes and empirically evaluates the articulation of the sociological theory of Tilly (2004; 2005; 2006a; 2006b) about the categorization of reasons, with three psychological models: the elaboration likelihood model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986), the construal level theory (Trope & Liberman, 2003) and the expectancy disconfirmation model (Meyer, Reisenzein & Schutzwohl, 1997). Study 1, an exploratory study, highlights the tendency of players and football coaches to assign reasons of popular language. Study 2, an experimental study, demonstrates the preference of fans for reasons in terms of Cause-Effect Explanations. The implications of the differences in criteria for awarding reasons by players and coaches and for the acceptance by the fans are discussed. New studies to further develop and evaluate the theory of Tilly in a Social Cognition framework are also presented.
