Dialect Variation and "Natural Barriers" in the Starling ; Variations dialectales et "barrières naturelles" chez l'étourneau sansonnet (Sturnus vulgaris)

Abstract: International audience ; Local variations of whistles of sedentary male starlings were studied un an area showing a relatively diversified environment. Observations made precedently in two other areas had showed that there are five species-specific whistled themes which present local variations. A complex dialectical system with five super-imposed "levels" appeared thus with dialectical areas from a few hundreds of m2 for a theme to more than 900km2 for another. The same general organization was found again here but "natural barriers" seem to appear for some themes. For the themes HT and IT, different dialects appear on both side of a forest or a great surface of heath. They correspond to habitats which are not used by starlings to nest to feed. For ST, the dialectical areas are very great and seem to skirt these "natural obstacles".
