The informants are five LSB proficient deaf teachers and fifteen deaf children who go to a school for deaf people in Porto Alegre city. The children are between 6:04 and 11:1, started LSB acquisition between 0:0 and 4:1, never failed at school and do not show visual, neurological and/or mental disorders. The instrument is composed of two parts: in the first part, lexical proficiency, the informant’s knowledge of the vocabulary used in the instrument, is evaluated; and in the second, the handshape parameter is analyzed through thirty tasks organized in five items. These tasks were compiled and organized considering the conditions for good sign formation and LSB phonology. The results showed that the instrument enables the evaluation of phonological awareness in the handshape parameter and that the tasks have different complexity levels. The data concerning the informants’ assessment, essential for the instrument analysis, enabled remarks on phonological awareness development in deaf children who are in the process of acquiring language. Thus, through the use of the proposed instrument, it was observed that the period of language exposure influenced the performance of the children. They showed better performance in accordance with the increase of the period of exposure to LSB. Moreover, it was possible to make some considerations on the phonological acquisition in deaf children who are LSB users supported by the findings of this research. ; Esta pesquisa propõe a elaboração e a aplicação de um instrumento para avaliar a consciência fonológica de crianças surdas, utentes da Língua de Sinais Brasileira (LSB), em um dos principais parâmetros estudados na fonologia da língua de sinais, a configuração de mão (CM), e também a análise do próprio instrumento quanto à sua aplicabilidade e eficiência. Os informantes desta pesquisa são cinco professores surdos, proficientes na LSB, e quinze crianças surdas estudantes de uma escola para surdos da cidade de Porto Alegre, com faixa etária entre 6:0 e 11:1, não repetentes, com o início da aquisição da linguagem na LSB entre 0:0 e 4:1, e que não apresentam alterações visuais, neurológicas e/ou deficiência mental. O instrumento é composto de duas partes: na primeira, avalia-se a proficiência lexical, ou seja, os conhecimentos dos informantes em relação ao vocabulário do instrumento, e, na segunda, a consciência fonológica do parâmetro CM por meio de trinta tarefas organizadas em cinco itens. Estas foram elaboradas e organizadas considerando as condições para a boa-formação de sinais e a fonologia da LSB. Os resultados demonstraram que o instrumento proposto possibilita a avaliação da consciência fonológica no parâmetro CM, e que as tarefas possuem diferentes níveis de complexidade. Os dados referentes às avaliações dos informantes, essenciais para a análise do instrumento, possibilitaram que considerações sobre o desenvolvimento da consciência fonológica em crianças surdas em processo de aquisição da linguagem fossem realizadas. Assim, por meio da aplicação do instrumento de avaliação proposto, foi constatado que o período de exposição lingüística influenciou o desempenho das crianças. Houve a tendência de os informantes apresentarem melhor desempenho conforme o aumento do período de exposição lingüística na LSB. Além disso, algumas considerações sobre a relação entre aquisição da fonologia em crianças surdas utentes da LSB e esta pesquisa foram estabelecidas.
