Abstract:
Dans un effort d'interprétation charitable d'une remarque, obscurantiste à première vue, d'un Wittgenstein qui n'écartait pas l'éventualité d'un chaos cérébral sous l'ordre des mots du discours, nous avons parcouru la littérature scientifique des 25 dernières années dans les domaines de la neurologie de l'aphasie, de l' électro-encéphalographie et de l'imagerie cérébrale fonctionnelle du langage. Le scepticisme de Wittgenstein en ce qui concerne le caractère causal de la relation entre cerveau et langage nous a paru avoir au sein même de la recherche neuroscientifique un écho dans la discussion et la révision du modèle des bases neuronales du langage hérité de Broca et Wernicke. A titre d'expérience de pensée, nous avons essayé de voir dans quelle mesure l'abandon du concept d'organe du langage au profit d'une distribution des mêmes fonctions linguistiques sur de multiples régions travaillant parallèlement sans ordre hiérarchique unique, ne réhabiliterait pas Wittgenstein. ; Is language in the brain ? In an attempt at a sympathetic reading of a prima facie obscurantist remark by Wittgenstein, who had not discarded the eventuality of there being a cerebral chaos under the orderly occurrence of our words in speech, we have done a survey of the scientific littérature of these last 25 years in the fields of the neurology of aphasy, and the electroencephalographic and positron emission tomographic studies of language. Wittgenstein's scepticism as to the causal character of the brain -language relationship seemed to us to be echoed, at the very heart of neuroscientific research, in the discussion and reshaping of the Broca's and Wernicke's model of the neural basis of language. We have tentatively interpreted as partly vindicating Wittgenstein the giving up of the concept of a language organ in favour of a distribution of the same linguistic functions upon scattered areas working in parallel, and not in a unique and hierarchical order of processing. ; Petit Jean-Luc.
