Abstract: This study builds on previous work with children on the autism spectrum suggesting that using their focused interests may support learning. Previous research has tailored social communication interventions using children’s focused interests and has indicated that outcomes may be improved when these interests are incorporated. Trials using focused interests to support vocabulary learning have not yet been reported; however, previous research pointing to the value of added salience of instructional cues in word learning situations points to the potential value of these personalized features. We conduct an experiment (enrolling a nonspectrum sample and a sample of children on the autism spectrum) to test the value of adding cues based on children’s focused interests as compared to cues that are neutral according to children’s preferences. ...
