Temporal organisation in vowel + consonant sequences in two varieties of Vienna
Abstract:
; For Central Bavarian varieties, to which the Viennese varieties belong, it is assumed that there is a distinctive contrast in duration in consonants, whereas the vowel duration can be derived from the duration of the following consonant. It is further assumed that only combinations of long vowels with short consonants and short vowels with long consonants occur. This description of the combination of vowel + consonant sequences is based on the so-called Pfalz’ law, which is applied to all Central Bavarian varieties. However, it does not adequately describe the temporal organisation in the Viennese varieties, since empirical studies (1) repeatedly show exceptions to this rule and (2) no empirical studies on temporal organisation in unstressed positions exist. The analyses presented in this thesis are based on phonetic duration measurements of the vowel + consonant sequences of 38 speakers (standard and non-standard variety, older and younger speakers). Stressed vowel + consonant sequences in word-medial and word-final position (trochaic mono- and disyllabics) as well as unstressed sequences in word-final position (trochaic disyllabics) are considered. Regarding the unstressed position, the relative reduction between stressed and unstressed vowels is evaluated. The data is discussed using the apparent-time approach by comparing production data of older (>45 years) and younger (<30 years) speakers. The results show that the vowel duration is not predictable in all cases by the consonant duration and thus Pfalz’ law is not sufficient to describe the temporal organisation of vowel + consonant sequences in the Viennese varieties. Furthermore, it was shown that in word-final position the standard variety exhibits processes that neutralize the consonant contrast that are not present in the non-standard variety. Regarding the relative reduction between stressed and unstressed vowels in the same word, it was shown that unstressed vowels can be reduced. However, the degree of relative reduction highly depends on the vowel phoneme in the stressed and also in the unstressed position. Regarding the comparison of age groups, it was shown that younger and older speakers show differences, and younger speakers display an unstable linguistic system.
