Abstract:
Technology-mediated communication is constrained by the cognitive costs and affordances of communication media (see Brennan & Lockridge, 2006). In particular, access to facial information and gestures can affect turn-taking and the outcome of group-discussions (see Whittaker, 2006). For example, in video/speech and face-to-face discussions participants are more likely to compromise than in speech-only discussions (Short et al., 1976; Behrens & Kret, 2019). Accordingly, it is more likely that coalitions form during video/speech and face-to-face discussions than in speech-only discussions (Reid, 1977; Hiltz et al., 1986). However, the effects of different formats of visual display on online multiparty discussions are not well understood. Specifically, we note that many videoconferencing technologies allow presentation of many participants (gallery-mode) or one participant (speaker-mode) on the screen.
