Abstract: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the globe have ordered their citizens to stay in their homes, limiting their social interactions to household members. This severe limitation on everyday social connection may have a particularly strong effect on pregnant women, who are likely to be the only ones in their immediate household to experience profound physical and psychological changes associated with pregnancy. In this research project, we investigate how social support and social conflict experienced by pregnant women during the COVID-19 epidemic impacts the learning abilities of their future children. Past research has shown that prenatal stress due to natural disasters can have an adverse effect on infant birth outcomes and subsequent cognitive development. However, the severe curtailment of social interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic provides us with a unique opportunity to examine whether, and to what extent, the learning abilities of future generations depend on the present-day ...
