Abstract:
How do humans map words onto their correct referents in ambiguous learning environments? Recent studies show adults learn correct word-referent mapping by calculating their co-occurrences across multiple scenes (cross-situational statistical learning, CSSL) (Yu & Smith, 2007). CSSL is successful when an object has one single name (1:1 mapping) or has more than one name (2:1 mapping) (Benitez et al., 2016; Yurovsky & Yu; 2008). Bilinguals encounter such 2:1 mapping daily, where the two words of the same referent are linguistically distinctive (e.g. English “dog” and Mandarin “gou Tone3” of the same referent “dog”). However, to date, CSSL literature has not fully investigated the effect of 2:1 mapping similar to a bilingual’s learning environment where the two words are linguistically different. This study will thus address two questions in a CSSL 2:1 mapping task: 1). Do adults learn differently when the two words of the same referent are the same or are differentiated by a linguistic cue? 2). How do ...
