Abstract:
This thesis provides an overview of the major theories on metaphor in different branches of linguistics. The common types of metaphor in terms of their syntactic structure and novelty are outlined. The traditional approach of treating metaphor in view of literalness, context and anomaly is discussed and the contemporary approach of treating metaphor as a mode of conceptualization is also explained with examples. Also surveyed are the existing attempts of computational methods for processing metaphor based on linguistic semantics and knowledge resources. The idea of scriptbased semantic theory is briefly explained and its possible application to the computational analysis of metaphor is explored. A proposal is made to process metaphor as the selection of the relevant property based on a list of pre-defined properties built into the lexicon and the operation of combinatorial rules.
