Abstract:
International audience ; This article proposes to reflect on the theoretical articulations between French Discourse Analysis and Gender Studies around the concept of agency, particularly as formulated by Butler. The concept of agency has indeed been popular in the field of Gender and Language Studies, and I will show that it can be quite productive for French Discourse Analysis (FDA) if several theoretical revisions are made. First of all, I will situate the Butlerian concept of agency in relation to other meanings of the term in linguistic approaches. I will expand on the richness of the use of this concept as well as on its limits, especially with regard to how it can be applied to data analysis within a discursive perspective. Taking up certain fundamental concepts and approaches of French Discourse Analysis, I will try to show how an integration of agency into FDA is possible, notably by theorizing the displacement of identification filiations within discursive formations.
