Abstract: By considering the dictionary as a work that brings countless information about the language and culture of a people, in this article the objective is to present it as a fundamental didactic-pedagogical instrument in the process of initial reading instruction and literacy in the first and second years of elementary school. For this, the objectives and principles of Pedagogical Lexicography are discussed, which takes dictionaries as its object and this theme as the focus of discussion. In addition, there is a reflection on initial reading instruction and literacy, rescuing the dictionary as a fundamental element in this process. Finally, some suggestions of activities are presented as capable of assisting in the process of initial reading instruction and literacy, thus highlighting the potential of the dictionary as a linguistic and cultural resource. ; Ao considerar o dicionário como uma obra que traz inúmeras informações sobre a língua, a linguagem e a cultura de um povo, neste artigo, o objetivo é apresentá-lo como um instrumento didático-pedagógico fundamental no processo de alfabetização e letramento no primeiro e no segundo ano do Ensino Fundamental. Para tanto, discutem-se os objetivos e princípios da Lexicografia Pedagógica, que toma os dicionários como objeto e essa temática como foco de discussão. Além disso, faz-se uma reflexão sobre alfabetização e letramento, resgatando o dicionário como elemento fundamental nesses processos. Por fim, são apresentadas algumas sugestões de atividades capazes de auxiliar na alfabetização e no letramento, evidenciando, assim, o potencial do dicionário como recurso linguístico e cultural.
