; The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the research on Spanish glides from different theoretical approaches, and to explore a possibility within the framework of a declarative phonology using HPSG formalism. The relevance of representations or rules in the model has mostly guided the orientation of research: to phonomize glides is the priority in structualist and functional phonology, whereas explaining the relations between several phonological representations is the task of the standard generative model. Assuming that grammar is a system os constraints, phonological generalizations can be formulated as descriptions of well-formed representations. From this viewpoint, the Spanish inventory of segments includes the vowel segments i, u, and the consonant segments palatal affricate, palatal plosive, palatal approximant, and labiovelar approximant. The syllable-organization principles will decide the phonetic absence of any mark of nuclearity in the lexical representation
